I just came back from India (Hyderabad the city) and just about to fly over to Australia ,where I was going to take some magnificent photos of Ayers Rock. I had been told by a friend that there were some big kangaroos that live on Ayers Rock and many people had been hit and killed by head injuries for going into kangaroos territory.
I was halfway to Australia when one of the waiters on the plane had told me that my dog Skippy had arrived safe and sound in Australia. My Dog Skippy couldn’t come on the plane with me so they had to put her to sleep and then fly her over with some other pets.
Next minute the plane starts to land, “is the trip over already ?” I said to the man next to
me. He was asleep so I asked the guy across from me he was also asleep. So I decide to just go with it. Next minute they asked us to get our stuff off the plane .
I walk off the plane and through the corridor to see my dog Skippy there waiting for me. I run to her, I was so happy to see her again, I hadn’t seen Skippy since I sent her on the plane from India . I booked into a motel by Ayers Rock in the small town Uluru. It is only 10 minutes from Ayers Rock . I planned to set off at 9:00am in the morning to get some sunrising pics. I wake up the next morning to the sound of birds tweeting sweetly and a bird sat on my window sill. I got dressed and set of f to Ayers Rock.
When we got to Ayers rock we saw kangaroos everywhere . Now I know that my friend wasn't kidding that there were heaps of kangaroos on Ayers Rock . I found a place where there weren't many kangaroos but one big one and a two joeys.
It was about lunch time so I packed up the gear and went to have lunch. Just as I walked away I heard a thump, a very big thump , I turned around Karboos (the big kangaroo as I had named it) was chasing me . It was fast, very fast, my hands were sweating , I was running as fast as I could was I fast enough I kept saying to myself . There was a crack up ahead I had to jump as far as I could other wise I,lled fall there was 60 percent out 100 that I could die. I would have to take a leap of faith- and believe in myself. I jump, my first foot lands on the ground and my second foot justs makes it. Now it it time for Skippy to jump the kangaroo is catching up. She’s scared I can see it in her eyes I keep
saying jump its going to be all right just jump. Skippy she jumps her front paws touch the other side one of her paws slip ,I try to grab her but I'm to late .
The kangaroo backed off I just think I came to close.
That problem dealt with, nexts problem, how am I going to get Skippy out of the crack ? luckily she had survived the fall . The crack was about 12 meter deep, I tried the rope I had, it wasn't long enough. I called for help. No one came. I gave Skippy some food to calm her down it worked for about 15mins then it wore off. I didn’t want to leave her there alone but I had to so I could get Skippy help. I promise I won't be long.
About 10mins later I came back with two firemen they said “it wasn't the first time someone had fallen down the crack “. They said “they would have to go back and get the truck. To get the big ladder “they would take about 5mins .The two firemen Bob and Bobby said to keep feeding Skippy to keep her calm.
They came back with their big shiny red truck. As soon as they got out they put the ladder down and rescued Skippy out of the hole. . I said “Thank you “and they walked off. “Ah but next time put a lead on the dog “they said!”Ok!!!”.
We went back to the motel and I had tea. Then we went back to Ayers Rock to take some
final photos of the sunset and then went back to the motel.
That night I got up at 11.00 o’clock to get pack to go on the plane at 11.30.
I was on the plane nearly back to NZ (my home) 30mins later I arrived back in NZ I was so glad to be in NZ for 10mins before I headed to Canada on another plane to start another adventure.
Well here we go again!!!
